For the past ten years, my area of research focus has been the usability and safety of medical technologies throughout the health care system in a wide variety of environments of use, with a special focus on medication safety and safety in home care.  I have participated in the establishment of a Healthcare Human Factors Group and the HumanEra Team comprising a total of fifteen expert staff, educated at the PhD and Masters levels in human factors engineering, cognitive psychology and biomedical engineering.

In July 2010, I was appointed the Inaugural Chair-holder of the Baxter Chair in Health Technology at the University Health Network/University of Toronto.  This appointment allows me to focus full-time on research in health technology safety.  I lead the Health Technology Safety Research Team, a team of eight PhD and Masters-trained individuals with academic preparation in biomedical engineering, human factors engineering and cognitive psychology.
